Sd.Kfz.232 Fu (8rad)
The Sd.Kfz. 234 ( Sonderkraftfahrzeug 234, Special Purpose Vehicle 234), was a family of armoured cars designed and built in Germany during World War II. The vehicles were lightly armoured, armed with a 20, 50 or 75 mm main gun, and powered by a Tatra V12 diesel engine. [3] The Sd.Kfz. 234 broadly resembles the appearance of Sd.Kfz. 231 (8 rad).

The SdKfz 232 was the Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (Fu), a SdKfz 231 with a more powerful radio. The obvious difference is the huge frame antenna that spread above the vehicle - often called a bedframe antenna for obvious reasons. The antenna served a FuG 11 SE 100 100-watt radio that had a range of 50 km or more.

The SdKfz 231 was available to the German Army for its invasions of Western Europe. After-action reports suggested that the vehicle was too lightly armored along its frontal face, against even machine gun fire, which led to a July 1940 initiative to add spaced armor plating to this critical area.

Magirus provided engines and also built the Schwere Panzerspähwagen (Fu) Sd.Kfz.232 6 rad radio version, produced to an extent of 28 vehicles. Versions The Daimler-Benz Type G3 prototype weighed 4.9 tons and was characterized by a large gap between the front wheels and rear 1st axles, and a single 7.92 mm (0.31 in) MG 03 machine gun in the turret.

The SdKfz 263 was similar in scope to the SdKfz 232 with an aerial framework added but its turret was fixed and lacking the 20mm cannon, reducing the vehicle's combat effectiveness. Only a machine gun in a limited-traverse ball-mount was retained. Like the SdKfz 232, the SdKfz 263 was based on the Magirus production chassis.

The illustrated Sd. Kfz. 232 of the second series, which was made beginning in June 1939, was photographed during a military exercise. The Sd.Kfz.232 features all-new toolings, and the upper and lower hull sections are made as one-piece elements via slide molds. The large armored car is composed of many irregularly shaped and angled plates, so the kit obviously requires extremely precise tolerances when it fits together. Thanks to the use of CAD drawings and high-tech molding.

The Panzerspahwagen Sd. Kfz. 232 was one of many various types of vehicles with eight-wheel drive and eight-wheel steering used by armored reconnaissance units of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. These armored vehicles were used in many campaigns in Africa and Europe during World War 2.

This is indeed the Sd.Kfz. 232 that Tamiya released way back in 1974 (Kit #35036) but, as they have done recently with other kits from that era, they have added some new parts to update this venerable kit.

The Sd.Kfz. 232 was armed with a 20 mm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon. This cannon was based on the 20 mm FlaK 30 anti-aircraft gun, and was capable of firing at a cyclic rate of 280 rounds per minute. The 20 mm cannon was not designed to defeat enemy tanks; experiments were made towards replacing it with a heavier gun, which resulted in the Sd.Kfz. 234/2.

The radio version (Fu) was called Sd.Kfz.232 by the Waffenamt (28 built). But this model, popular for propaganda purposes, was nevertheless too heavy for its engine and off-road capabilities were rather limited. It was consequently dropped after June 1940 and phased out, joining various driver training schools. Hello dear reader!
